Writers Round: Portland FAQs
What is Writers Round?
Writers Round is a Nashville-style songwriter showcase with open and feature rounds hosted by Ronnie Carrier and Ben Grace. Each round consists of three performers, playing one song at a time. Open round performers, selected randomly throughout the night, play one song each. Feature round performers get three songs each.
This event is part of a larger network of Writers Round chapters across the U.S., including Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, Knoxville, and New Jersey. The goal is to foster meaningful connections among artists in the Portland music scene and beyond.
When/where?
This free, all-ages event happens every first Wednesday* of the month at Arbor Beer Lodge in North Portland (6550 N Interstate Ave). The first open round hat picks start around 7pm on the venue’s brand-new stage.
*Subject to holidays.
How does it work?
Each performer in the round plays three original songs (no covers allowed). Open rounds are selected by drawing names from a hat throughout the night, so be sure to toss your name in!
How are feature rounds chosen?
Feature rounds are curated by Ronnie Carrier, Ben Grace, and the Portland Songwriters Guild. Songwriters who play in open rounds are highly considered for future feature rounds.
Who can play?
Open rounds are available to anyone who can play one original song. This event is all ages for performers and attendees. However, people have to be able to sit on stage for up to 15 minutes without causing distractions to others. The open and featured rounds are for showcasing original music only. We want to hear the good, bad, polished, or unfinished originals.
Is there sound support?
Yes, there’s always someone running sound, with three mics and three ¼ inch cables available. Bring your own instrument if possible; we sometimes have a keyboard or guitar available to borrow but we can’t guarantee it.
Do I have to perform to attend?
Nope! Feel free to come and enjoy the music and stories, grab a beer, or grab dinner from the food carts.
Is there a cover charge?
There’s no cover, but the host will pass around a tip jar. All tips split equally among the featured performers.
